For a clinic, coaching centre, salon, showroom or any business that serves customers nearby, the three businesses Google shows in its map results get a large share of calls. Local SEO is the work of earning one of those spots. The good news is that most of it is within your control, and much of it costs nothing but time.
This is the checklist we use when we start working with a local business. It's ordered by impact, so if you only have an afternoon, start at the top.
1. Claim and verify your Google Business Profile
Everything in local search starts here. Search for your business on Google Maps. If a profile exists, claim it; if not, create one at business.google.com. Verification methods vary and may include a video of your premises, so have your signage, a business document and your working space ready.
If you serve customers at their location rather than at your premises, set yourself up as a service-area business and hide your address. Don't list a virtual office or a relative's address. Google suspends profiles for this, and reinstating them is slow.
2. Get your categories right
Your primary category has more influence on which searches you appear for than almost anything else in your profile. Choose the most specific category that describes your main service ("Dental clinic" rather than "Doctor"), then add a few secondary categories for other services you genuinely offer. Look at the top-ranking competitors in your area for ideas, but don't add categories you can't back up.
3. Complete every section of the profile
- Business name: exactly as it appears on your signage. Adding keywords such as "Best Dentist Ghaziabad" breaks Google's guidelines and risks suspension.
- Phone and WhatsApp: a number that is answered during working hours.
- Hours: including special hours for festivals and holidays.
- Services and products: each one listed with a short description.
- Description: what you do, who you serve and what makes you different, written for people rather than keywords.
- Photos: your storefront, interior, team and work. Real photos outperform stock images.
4. Make your details consistent everywhere
Search engines cross-check your name, address and phone number across the web. If Justdial, IndiaMART, Facebook, your website and your Google profile all show slightly different details, it weakens trust in all of them. Make a list of every place your business is listed, then correct any old phone numbers, addresses or business names. This is often called citation clean-up.
5. Build a simple system for reviews
Reviews influence both rankings and the decision to call. The businesses with the strongest review profiles rarely have a secret. They just ask consistently.
- Create a short review link from your Google Business Profile.
- Send it by WhatsApp to customers soon after a good experience.
- Reply to every review, positive or negative, politely and specifically.
Never buy reviews, offer discounts in exchange for them or post them yourself. Google and Indian consumer protection rules both prohibit fake reviews, and profiles can be suspended for them.
6. Give each service its own page on your website
Your Google profile links to your website, and Google uses your site to understand what you do. A single homepage listing ten services rarely ranks well for any of them. Create a page for each core service that explains what it includes, who it suits, how the process works, typical questions and how to get in touch.
If you serve several areas, a page for each area can help, but only if each page has genuinely local information: the neighbourhoods you cover, local landmarks, how customers reach you and examples of local work. Pages that simply swap one city name for another are treated as low quality.
7. Make your website fast and easy on mobile
Most local searches happen on phones, often on mobile data. Check your site on your own phone. Does it load in a couple of seconds? Can you tap the phone number and WhatsApp button easily? Is the text readable without zooming? If not, those visitors are going back to Google and calling a competitor.
8. Post updates to your profile regularly
Google Business Profile posts let you share offers, events and news. They're a simple way to show that your business is active, and they give people more reasons to choose you. A post a week, with a real photo, is a good habit.
9. Earn local mentions and links
Mentions from local news sites, associations, chambers of commerce, event pages and partner businesses help Google see your business as an established part of the community. Sponsor a local event, contribute to a residents' association newsletter or work with complementary businesses on joint offers.
10. Track calls and enquiries, not just rankings
Your Google Business Profile shows calls, direction requests and website clicks. Add enquiry tracking to your website forms and WhatsApp buttons through Google Analytics. Rankings are a means to an end. What matters is whether local search is bringing in customers.
How long does local SEO take?
Fixing your profile and listings often shows an effect within weeks. Building enough reviews, content and local authority to compete in busy categories in large cities typically takes three to six months. Smaller towns and less competitive categories usually move faster.
If you'd rather have this done for you, our local SEO services cover every step on this list, and our Google Business Profile management keeps your profile active month after month.
